I’m an addict.
No, I’m not talking yarn or knitting here, (That’s not an addiction, just a healthy appreciation for the greatness of all things yarn.) or even illegal drugs.
I’m talking about one major caffeine addiction in the form of Pepsi to the tune of 20-64 oz a day sort of addiction. I’m even so bad as to sneak into the house or behind my husband’s back (He’s back after me to get off of it for years & years.) just like a drug addict or alcoholic. There is no time of the day when I won’t have a Pepsi; 1st thing in the morning with breakfast, one with my morning snack, of course, I have to one with lunch, then another for an afternoon pick-me-up…You get the idea.
Now some of your are probably saing that’s not a problem as you set down your cup of caffeine of choice. For many of you that would be correct. However, I crossed the line into addiction years ago. I Need caffeine, preferrably Pepsi to function. That is a classic textbook definition of an addiction.
This much caffeine is not good for me; not to mention all the sugar and empty calories. The phosphoric acid in pop eats away at your teeth and leaches calcium out of your bones. High fructose may be the leading cause of diabetes and insulin resistance today. Pop alone is probably responsible for most of the 50 lbs I’ve put on in the last 9 years.
So obvisously I know pop is bad for me. I know I need to get off of it. And I’ve tried many times to ditch the habit the last 7 years. I think my personal best is 3 months. Everytime, I get going really well and then my stress levels go through the roof: i.e. end of the semester, job stress, fight with hubby, PMS, new job, etc., etc.
Looking back on all my attempts, I realize they were trys, not me fully committing to kicking this habit. This time, I’m facing the music, fessing up that I have a real problem here. Is it going to be easy to kick this? No, not even close. But for the sake of my health, I need to do this.
So my brilliant plan: I spend about $15-20 in Pepsi a week. That’s about the cost of a skein of yarn. So for every week I go without a single Pepsi, I can buy myself a skein of yarn. No, it won’t help my yarn stash grow any smaller but hopefully it will be the bribe I need to knock myself out of this rut.
