My chances of going to Rhinebeck are probably nil with me living in Idaho and Rhinebeck being all the way across the country. However, I am going to Sock Summit one way or the other even if I have to hitchhike to get there. What is Sock Summit? It is knitting fair just for sock knitting put together by the Yarn Harlot, Tina Newton of BMFA and Cat Bordhi with everything under the sun about sock knitting; toe-up socks, cuff-down socks, designing socks, cuffs, heels, dyeing yarn for socks. You name it, there is a class or a vendor there who will be there August 6-9, 2009 in Portland, Oregon.
Rhinebeck has the Rhinebeck sweater tradition; knit a complicated sweater to wear and show off at Rhinebeck. See Yarn Harlot’s blog for example. That’s fine and dandy but I’m not really a sweater person. Handknitted socks are my first and foremost love. So instead of a Rhinebeck sweater, I’m proposing Sock Summit Socks. Something that will show off and challenge your sock knitting skills to wear during Sock Summit. Everyone needs to be reminded that they are a great knitter regardless of how many classes they have and have not taken. And what better place to show off the pinnacle of your sock knitting skills where people will actually appreciate them instead of thinking you are stark raving crazy for knitting your own socks?
Anyone with me? It can be a complicated pattern that you’ve always wanted to knit but scared to, it can be the wonderful sock design that’s been lurking in the back of your head or taking your amazing handspun/handdyed and knitting a sock that does it’s beauty justice.
Sock Summit is four days of sock wonderfulness. I’m going a little crazy at the moment and have all ready come up with three of the four pairs I’m going to knit.
I’ve picked out Twisted Flower by Cookie A in Dream in Color Starry Dusky Aurora, Mystic Sea by Cass White in Blue Moon Fiber Arts Sheep to Shoe in My Blue Heaven lovingly spun up for me by Las, and all ready casted on is Titania’s Revenge by Cookie A in Blue Moon Fiber Arts STR Lightweight in Yosemite. I want to knit Rhiannon also by Cookie A but I can’t think of a good yarn to show off the cable pattern without being plain boring solid. Any suggestions?

thanks for the blog comment! I’m not socking much these days but your look fab, can’t wait to watch them progress!
as for fat chickens, yes indeedy!
Boy, are you going to be busy! After that, perhaps you will have time to do a Beer Bottle shawl
I wish I could go to Sock Summit, but we are laid off and it is just not practical. I will be there in spirit though!
